Criterion Online Writing Evaluation Software Tool

The Criterion Online Writing Evaluation Tool is recommended to MDC students who are planning on taking the essay section of the CLAST. This program will provide you with writing practice as well as immediate feedback on your writing skills. Please do not confuse the score you receive on Criterion with the CLAST scoring scale. 

The CLAST scoring scale is based upon two readers and the Criterion score is based upon one reading using automated scoring technology. 

The Criterion score is meant to provide you with an evaluation of your own writing skills so you can monitor your improvement from the first essay you write using Criterion to the last.  Your improvement will depend upon the amount of time you spend using the features and practicing the writing assignments. You can purchase this tool at an MDC Bookstore.
