CEREMONY TO WELCOME THE 2007 MIAMI DADE HONORS COLLEGE CLASS
MIAMI, Sept. 25, 2007 – Miami Dade College welcomes a new Honors College freshman class with a special “pinning ceremony” on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wolfson Campus Chapman Conference Center, 300 N.E. Second Ave., Building 3, Room 3210, Miami.
This year’s incoming class of 311 represents the largest in the history of the Honors College. To recognize the new class, sophomore Grace Castro will present an Honors College pin to freshman Ricardo Fernandez, an international student from Peru before more than 700 students and parents expected to attend the event. Each student will receive their own pin as well. Michael Salerno and Sonia Gutierrez, two second-year students, will serve as master and mistress of ceremonies, respectively.
“The pinning ceremony is a symbol of pride and a way to solidify the students,” said Honors College Dean Alexandria Holloway.
Faculty will talk about new programs that strive to make an impact on the community. The I Have a Dream Project, organized by MDC English professors Carlos Gonzalez and Alejandro Salinas, provide Honors College students with the chance to mentor and tutor fourth graders at Phillis Wheatley Elementary located in Overtown.
The annual tradition has been an integral part of the Honors College since its birth five years ago. The formal recognition also serves as an opportunity to introduce the many opportunities available through the Honors College, including receiving a top-notch education while participating in service learning projects, traveling abroad and attending cultural events. A Time magazine article in 2005 tabbed the MDC Honors College an “Ivy stepladder.”
