KICK-OFF CELEBRATION SEPTEMBER 17 AT FREEDOM TOWER

MIAMI, August 27, 2007 – Each year, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts (the Center) at Miami Dade College hosts the largest and finest book fair in the nation. This year, the 2007 Miami Book Fair International (Fair), which will be held Nov. 4-11 at Miami Dade College and surrounding streets, will be no exception. Festivities begin with a press conference and kick-off celebration on Monday, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the historic Freedom Tower, 600 Biscayne Blvd. where many important details on the Fair will be announced.
This year, two official Book Fair posters will be unveiled at the kick-off event. The general Book Fair poster and one designed specifically for the fair’s Children’s Alley were conceived by two talented artists who are Miami Dade College alumni.
In a cooperative venture with BookExpo America (BEA), the Center will be announcing a new component that has been added to this year’s activities - The Translation Marketplace: a World Literature and Translation Summit. A special news conference detailing specifics regarding this venture will be held at the beginning of the kick-off celebration at 6:30 p.m., to be followed by the announcement of other activities and the poster unveiling.
In addition, the Center will introduce the book selections for the upcoming Big Read program and the One Picture Book, One Community project. These initiatives are designed to promote literacy among adults as well as children.
“This is an exciting time for literacy in South Florida,” said Alina Interián, executive director of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts. “The 2007 Book Fair is the crown jewel, and the Center makes that jewel shine even brighter by promoting reading all year long. We look forward to the community getting involved and embracing these efforts.”
