MDC’S EIG-WATSON SCHOOL OF AVIATION POISED TO BECOME TRAINING GROUND FOR CHINESE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS
Miami, Sept. 27, 2007 – A delegation of high-ranking officials from the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) visited Miami Dade College’s Eig-Watson School of Aviation on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in search of advanced training options for their air traffic controllers. MDC is being considered among at least three other major U.S. institutions for the partnership.
“We are very pleased and honored to be considered,” said David Smith, chair of the Eig-Watson School of Aviation. “We have an extremely excellent facility and our faculty is unparalleled.”
If chosen, the first class is expected to begin next spring term. Initially, the CAAC plans to send a total of 60 controllers in groups of 12 to 15 to complete an intensive eight-week air traffic controllers training program. The CAAC is also exploring intensive English language training, the official language of worldwide aviation.
The Eig-Watson School of Aviation, located at the Homestead Campus, is one of only 13 aviation schools in the nation approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. The school’s established reputation combined with MDC’s proven success in the education of international students makes it an ideal candidate.
The Eig-Watson School of Aviation offers associate degrees and certificate programs in aviation administration and air traffic control, professional pilot technology, aviation maintenance management, airport operations, air cargo, and passenger services.
The aviation industry is booming and an expert workforce is needed to replace retiring workers and help meet future needs. China continues to modernize and upgrade its air traffic control systems by developing new air traffic technology and equipment in response to current and projected increases in the worldwide demand for air transport.
