MIAMI DADE COLLEGE PROFESSOR ED CALLE NOMINATED FOR SECOND LATIN GRAMMY

~Musician Ed Calle has taught at MDC since 2001~

 

MIAMI, Sept. 5, 2007 – For the second time since 2005, internationally acclaimed artist Ed Calle, a professor at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall and North campuses, has been nominated for a Latin Grammy.

 

Calle’s CD, In the Zone, is up for best instrumental album at the eighth annual Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, Thursday, Nov. 8. New World School of the Arts professor Jim Gasior (piano) and MDC adjunct professors Rafael Valencia (bass) and Jack Ciano (drummer) also recorded on this CD, which is up against the works of respected music veterans such as Chick Corea and Béla Fleck and others. The show will be broadcast worldwide to more than 100 countries by the Univision Television Network. 

 

“For me this an enormous honor,” Calle said. “This is a community of my music peers that decided this. To see my name along with Ray Barretto and Chick Corea and Béla Fleck is a great honor. ”

 

Calle, 48, started his prolific professional career when he was 15 playing with local bands. He has performed in recordings with Gloria Estefan, Frank Sinatra, The Bee Gees, Elton John, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Juan Luis Guerra, Arturo Sandoval, Julio Iglesias, and other award-winning musicians. Calle’s first solo album, Nightgames, was produced in 1986. He later recorded Double Talk (1996), Sunset Harbor (1999), and Twilight (2001). Ed Calle Plays Santana was completed in 2004 and earned him his first Grammy nomination in 2005. In addition, Calle has other CDs with the Miami Saxophone Quartet.


Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Calle immigrated with his family to Miami in 1968, where he still lives and performs. Calle is currently working on a doctorate degree in higher education leadership at Nova Southeastern University. He has been a professor at Miami Dade College since 2001. In addition to teaching at MDC, Calle also performs around the world with Arturo Sandoval and with his own band.


“This is very special time,” Calle said of his nomination. “I’m very flattered. Anytime we can represent the college well that’s a great thing. I fully expect that a few years from now we will be writing about my students.”
