MIAMI-DADE COUNTY COMMISSIONER SENATOR JAVIER SOUTO TO JOIN HIS COLLEAGUES ON THE BOARD OF THE FRANCISCO FOUNDATION AND MDC PRESIDENT DR. EDUARDO J. PADRON TO ANNOUNCE THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2007 FRANCISCO FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Miami, FL , Oct. 22, 2007 –– Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sen. Javier Souto, District 10, members of the Board of Directors of the Francisco Foundation, and Miami Dade College (MDC) President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón will announce the competition and application process for 2007 Francisco Foundation Scholarships at a news conference on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wolfson Campus, Batten Room 2106, 300 N.E. Second Avenue.
Participants will announce details on applying for the three $2,500 scholarships the group awards annually. As is customary for this Foundation, winners are selected on the basis of demonstrated leadership, community service, academic excellence and a love of democracy and freedom. Applicants are required to submit an essay explaining what freedom and democracy mean to them.
The scholarships were created in honor of Rogelio “Francisco” Gonzalez Corzo who was executed by Fidel Castro’s guards in 1961 when he was 28-years old for attempts to subvert the dictatorship. He was the head of the underground anti-Castro resistance “Movement to Recover the Revolution.”
“He was also a brilliant student; a man of unparalleled intelligence and charisma,” said Sen. Souto. “He was a student of democracy and human rights whose life was cut way too short by Castro.”
