MDC TO OPEN FIRST PUBLIC COLLEGE LIBRARY IN HIALEAH
Miami, FL Oct. 8, 2007 – Amid the purple and green interior walls, almost 4,000 books and movies wait to be discovered at the new Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus library, the first public college library to open in the area.
The entire community is invited to an opening celebration on Monday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. at MDC’s Hialeah Campus, 1780 W. 49 Street, Rooms 1119 and 1120, Hialeah. (Across the street from the Westland Mall)
MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón and U.S. Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart will be present for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Faculty, staff and students who helped build the library’s fine collection will have a chance to see the finished product.
The new, cutting-edge library is equipped with funky purple book carts, Internet access, eAudiobooks, laptop checkout, and 24/7 librarian support, among other features. The 2,000-square-foot space also houses an instructional lab where classes are taught on how to conduct research.
“College libraries today are the physical MySpace of educational institutions,” said Library Director Glenda Phipps. “Students come to meet one another, work together and find the best information available on-line, in a book, or downloaded to an MP3 player.”
This summer, the Hialeah Campus was officially established after serving the City of Hialeah as an MDC outreach center for 27 years. In just a short while, it has proven to be an invaluable resource for the city and neighboring communities.
