MDC INTERAMERICAN CAMPUS TO HOLD FIRST-EVER CHILD SAFETY FAIR
MIAMI, November 8, 2007- The InterAmerican Campus (IAC) at Miami Dade College (MDC) and the Little Havana Community Partnership invites children and their parents to attend the Caring for Kids Child Safety Fair, a free event aimed at making homes and communities safer for kids. It will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at SW 6 Street between 27 and 25 Avenues, adjacent to the IAC.
“The purpose of this event is to connect the community with the resources available to them relating to child safety, health, and education,” said Antonio Delgado, MDC InterAmerican Campus student life director. “Most people don’t know what is available to them and this is a way to link residents to the service providers of the Little Havana Community Partnership and other community agencies.”
This community event, open and free to the public, aims to help parents as well as children learn how to keep safe from a variety of situations such as what to do in case of a fire, how to deal with strangers, and even the basics in properly wearing bike helmets.
“We’re teaming up with community partners. There will be entertainment, giveaways, and a lot of different things going on,” said Lourdes Perez, Dean of Student Services at MDC’s InterAmerican Campus. “There will be fire fighters explaining how to stop, drop and roll in a fire emergency, and even tips on Internet safety. It will be a fun and informative event.”
The fair will feature demonstrations by the local police and fire departments. Free McGruff© Safe Kids child safety packages will be available for all parents. The kits include finger printing, children’s photos, and a DNA kit. The information completed for the kits will then be uploaded to a national database.
The Little Havana Community Partnership is a collaboration of partners representing a wide array of service providers and families. The goal of the Partnership is to reduce family and community violence and improve the well being of all children in Little Havana.
