MIAMI DADE COLLEGE OBSERVES AIDS AWARENESS WEEK
Miami, November 19, 2007 – Miami Dade College (MDC) has planned some moving and educational events for AIDS Awareness Week from Nov. 26 to 30. The observance will culminate in an AIDS walk on Friday, Nov. 30. The events promoting the awareness of HIV, AIDS, and STD’s are sponsored by the Student Government Association at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. All of the events will take place at the North Campus located at 11389 NW 27 Avenue, Miami, with the exception of the event on Thursday, Nov. 29, which will be held at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center located at 6300 N.W. Seventh Avenue, Miami.
“It is our hope that MDC’s observance of HIV/AIDS Awareness Week will raise awareness and help to fight the worldwide pandemic through education,” says Dr. José A. Vicente, president of MDC’s North Campus.
This is the second year that MDC has observed AIDS Awareness Week.
The schedule of events is as follows:
Monday, Nov. 26 –Breezeway, Building 4.
Agency Fair Day, 11 a.m to noon; a speaker on AIDS Prevention, noon to 1 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 27, HIV/AIDS Seminars, Room 4207-1
“Preventative Measures: Medications” presented by Covia Franklin, pharmaceutical representative, 9:50 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.; HIV/AIDS Awareness 101 and Dealing with AIDS Virus and Life,
11:15 a.m. – 12:25 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 28 – Game Day, Building 4, Cafeteria
Jeopardy Game, 10 a.m. to noon; Stop,Think AIDS & Go Game, noon – 1 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 29 – Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center, Room 1103
HIV and AIDS 101, speaker Teresa Neira, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Friday, Nov. 30 – Between Building 1 and 2 by the lake.
AIDS Walk “AIDS Does not Sleep”, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
MDC students, faculty, staff and administrators will participate in a walk around the North Campus lake to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Key statistics about the illnesses will be read
aloud and displayed on posters and banners. Students will be wearing “AIDS Awareness Shirts”.
