JAZZ AT WOLFSON SERIES PRESENTS WORLD-CLASS TRUMPETER BARRY RIES
Miami, November 29, 2007 – The Arts and Philosophy Department at Miami Dade College continues its successful Jazz at Wolfson Presents series with trumpeter Barry Ries on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at noon, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus.
“In a way, Barry is one of the country’s best kept secrets,” says Dr. Michael Di Liddo, MDC music professor and director of the series. “Barry’s playing is modern, musical, and interesting. He is a jazz musician who ranks among the finest.”
A native of Cincinnati, Ries picked up the trumpet at age 11 in a marching band. At age seven, he was already taking drum lessons from his father, whom he would follow around town playing at weddings and at other engagements.
In 1970, Ries joined the prestigious One O’clock Band at North Texas State University, a move that opened the doors for him. Since then, he has played side-by-side with many jazz greats, including Horace Silver, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Lavano, and Woody Herman.
Ries made his recording debut in 1998 with Solitude in the Crowd. He presently resides in Boston, where he performs and teaches both trumpet and drums.
