MDC WINS MULTIPLE STATEWIDE AWARDS FOR ITS COMMITMENT TO SERVICE-LEARNING AND THE COMMUNITY
Miami, October 22, 2007 – With the aim of enhancing student learning, meeting community needs and fostering civic responsibility, the Miami Dade College Center for Community Involvement (CCI) is a leader in service-learning. Now, MDC has been recognized for its commitment to the community with multiple awards at the Florida Campus Compact’s 2007 Inaugural Awards Gala and Dinner, held earlier this month in Tampa, Florida.
At the event, MDC was awarded the 2007 Engaged Campus Award in the “public college sector” category, which is given to institutions of higher education that demonstrate exemplary commitment to service-learning and community engagement. The world-renowned Miami Book Fair International, Cultura del Lobo series and the Miami International Film Festival are among the many significant programs presented by MDC.
North Campus Professor Diane Sloane received the Service-Learning Faculty Award and CCI Director Joshua Young took home the Community Engagement Educator Award.
“This award is a validation of the long-time, on-going commitment of MDC’s faculty, staff and administration to ensure that the College serves the community and that our students graduate as more engaged, informed and compassionate citizens,” said Young.
CCI is a college-wide program that serves all eight campuses. In addition to promoting service-learning, it functions as a volunteer clearinghouse for students, faculty and staff who wish to get involved in the community. Additionally, CCI coordinates MDC’s America Reads program, which is part of a national initiative to help children read well and independently by third grade.
Florida Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of higher education institutions that works to promote community engagement through research, academically rigorous service-learning, campus-community collaboration, civic engagement, and collegiate volunteerism. It is part of the Campus Compact, which is comprised of more than 1,000 member institutions in 47 states throughout the country.
