THREE MIAMI DADE COLLEGE STUDENTS WIN COCA-COLA SCHOLARSHIPS

MIAMI, July 7, 2006 –   Three Miami Dade College (MDC) students have been awarded the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship funded by the Coca-Cola Company in support of academic achievement and community service. Each student will receive an award in the amount of $1,000 to use for their educational expenses at MDC.

The winners are:  Diane Melville, North Campus, and Xavier Osorio and Leah Valdes both of the Wolfson Campus.

Each winner had to demonstrate academic success and have completed 100 hours of community service within the previous 12 months of submitting an application form and essay in what was a very competitive process.

“These students are raising the bar for their peers,” said Miami Dade College President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón. “Recognizing them is applauding their exemplary achievements both in and outside the classroom and encouraging others to continue in their path.  We are proud of their accomplishments.”

The Coca-Cola Two-Year Scholarship was created in 2000 through a grant from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation. Mr. Whitehead was one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola. The program recognizes students committed to community service and academic excellence.

“The Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program gives support and encouragement to an under-served population of college students,” said J. Mark Davis, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.  “This program is an extension of our long-standing commitment to college education throughout the United States.  These fine students, who often juggle school, work and family, continue to give back to their communities through volunteer service.”
