CONSTITUTION DAY AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE’S NORTH CAMPUS OFFERS MANY ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY

 

Miami, Sept. 17, 2007 - Miami Dade College’s North Campus will celebrate Constitution Day on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007.  Educational activities will take place at the North Campus and at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Educational Center. Copies of the U.S. Constitution will be distributed to attendees in English and Braille.

A voter registration drive at the North Campus breezeway Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. will give all non-registered citizens an opportunity to exercise their right to participate in the democratic process envisioned by the framers of the Constitution. At noon, there will be a panel discussion on issues relating to the Fourth Amendment (search and seizure) and eminent domain at the Lehman Theatre (Room 5120). Panelists will include the honorable Orlando Prescott, a Miami-Dade County Court judge and attorneys Lynn Overmann and Mark Ulmer. Student Government Association President Lance McGibbon will moderate.  Professor Michael Lenaghan will speak briefly about careers in political science and law before the panel discussion.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m. Steve Forester, senior policy advocate/attorney for Haitian Women of Miami, Inc. will address immigration issues and the Dream Act at the Carrie P. Meek Center.

 

On Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m., Dr. Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of South Florida, will speak on the topic of privacy. 

 

Students from several local high schools will participate in Constitution Day events at both locations. In addition, all events are free and open to the public.
