COLLEGE READING AND LEARNING ASSOCIATION (CRLA) CERTIFIES THE TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAM FOR ALL MATH SUPPORT LABS AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE
Students benefit from even higher quality and consistency at math labs college-wide
Miami, August 6, 2007 – The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), a national organization made up of colleagues from colleges and universities across the U.S., has certified the tutor training program now used by all mathematics support labs at Miami Dade College. The training program was created by the members of the quality enhancement plan (QEP) tutor training and support lab impact committee in conjunction with College Training and Development (CT&D).
The committee, which includes one mathematics department chair and nine full-time support lab staff members from seven MDC campuses, implemented the program’s components including two training workshops, the use of training videos, written reflections and mentoring. One of the tutor training workshops is now a CT&D workshop which may be used by other academic areas that have support labs.
“Everyone on the committee worked very hard and received excellent support from tutors, staff, faculty, CT&D, and many others over the nearly two years it took to complete this goal,” said Virginia Puckett, chair of the MDC North Campus math department, and also chair of the QEP impact committee responsible for creating the program. “Certified tutor training was one of the initiatives recommended by the College’s quality enhancement plan, and its implementation will allow departments and support labs to better realize our shared goal of student achievement and success.”
Offering a CRLA certified tutor program means that students will receive high quality and consistent tutoring at all academic support centers offering mathematics tutoring College-wide. All current math tutors have completed the new training program.
