FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FIGHTING HALLOWEEN CANDY WITH FLOSS, MDC dental hygiene STUDENTS TAKE TO OVERTOWN TO promote
PROPER DENTAL CARE among children
- Rainbow Village Community Center, Halloween Night, Tuesday, Oct. 31, 6 p.m. -
MIAMI, Oct. 26, 2006 – If you can’t beat them, join them. That is the attitude behind the efforts of Miami Dade College (MDC) dental hygiene students, who will take to the streets of Overtown armed with bags of candy in one hand and dental floss in the other from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween Night, Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Rainbow Village Community Center, 2140 N.W. Third Ave., Miami.
The special Halloween celebration in Overtown is expected to attract an estimated 300 to 400 low-income children. Dental hygiene students will take this opportunity to coach kids on proper dental care.
Realizing that children will receive candy and junk food as they celebrate Halloween, community leaders joined with the Dental Hygiene program at Miami Dade College’s Medical Center Campus to help promote proper dental care and turn a potential cavity-generating event into an educational experience.
City of Miami Police is one of the main organizers of the event, along with the New Horizons Overtown Family Enrichment Center, and the Miami Dade College Center for Community Involvement.
