~Miami Dade college to host 172 Fulbright scholars ~
MIAMI, August 8, 2007 – High-achieving students from every corner of the globe will soon arrive at Miami Dade College as part of the Fulbright Gateway Orientation. The college will host 172 foreign students from dozens of nations during two orientation sessions scheduled to be held at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. Second Avenue, from Aug. 13-17 and Aug. 20-24.
The students attending hail from Nepal, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Latvia, Brunei, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Ukraine, Turkey, Italy and other nations and territories. Fulbright scholars are among the best prepared students in the world and their specializations are as varied as their countries of origin. Their majors include international relations, filmmaking, music, business, environmental science, anthropology, and linguistics, among others.
Program participants have been awarded Fulbright scholarships to get their masters and doctorates at universities throughout the United States, and will complete a rigorous orientation schedule and calendar of events geared toward providing them with an overview of America’s academic, financial, and legal systems. Some of the schools they will attend include Duke, Columbia, Cornell, Yale and Georgetown universities.
“Miami Dade College welcomes the opportunity to once again host some of the brightest minds from around the world who will convene to share ideas and learn about our nation’s educational system,” said MDC President Eduardo J. Padrón. “Miami Dade College is the most diverse educational institution in the country, and the city of Miami is known world-wide for its multi-cultural atmosphere. We are the perfect place to immerse these students in the American way of life.”
The program, made possible by a grant funded by the U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education, welcomes foreign students into the country and familiarizes them with the basics of culture and life in the United States in a university setting. For many, this will be their first trip to America.
Among the topics scheduled to be presented by Miami Dade professors are time management, government and politics in the United States, history of American art, a historical overview of U.S. history, introduction to the U.S. academic system, American values and beliefs and managing stress and cross-cultural awareness. Scholars will also have an opportunity to visit South Beach and take a boat tour of Biscayne Bay.
