MIAMI, July 1, 2005 – Miami Dade College presents the works of renowned Latin American artist Cristóbal González Guzmán, in a remarkable exhibit running this summer from July 7 through August 10. A reception will be held Thursday, July 7 at 5 p.m., where the artist will introduce his artwork in display at the MDC Centre Gallery, 300 N.E. 2nd Av., Building 1, Room 1365.
“The artist uses personal and intrinsic life experiences allowing his brush to guide his art,” says art critic Lidia Sánchez Amores. “His predominant theme, almost invariable, is the woman and her struggle between encountered feelings of pain and love.”
González Guzmán began his relationship with the canvas in Miami, further developing his art in his native Quito, Ecuador, with the promotion of artistic projects of Latin America. His work evolved to a particular and intense use and distribution of colors over the canvas. In contemporary art in Ecuador, it’s hard to find an artist that breaks traditional patterns in the use color.
“Being an artist for me was actually kind of accidental…it [painting] stopped me from pursuing other goals in my life and, taking a life of its own, it pushed me to dedicate my life to her,” says González Guzmán. “However, I don’t regret what I’m doing because, although it is true that pain brings negative connotations, it can also purify our souls and I can project that in my paintings.”
