HONORS HISpanic heritage
WITH A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION
MIAMI, Sept. 24, 2007 – In commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Miami Dade College will present an exciting array of free events, such as art exhibits, lectures, film screenings, comedy shows, and dance classes through the month of October. Each of MDC’s eight campuses will contribute in unique ways.
Dance enthusiasts are invited to attend a Latin Street Party and flag parade with dance performances by members of the School of Arts and Letters beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Wolfson Campus student life patio, 300 N.E. Second Ave., Room 2101. Salsa, merengue, flamenco, and tango workshops with the IFÉ-ILÉ Afro-Cuban Dance and Music group will be available on Friday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at the same location.
Filipino comedian Edwin San Juan will share quick punch lines and hilarious stories at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. Second Ave., Room 2101. Local morning radio anchor Javier Romero will broadcast live from the Kendall Campus, 11011 S.W. 104 St., Room K413, on Monday, Oct. 8 starting at 8 a.m.
Santeria expert Mercedes Sandoval will present a lecture about the Afro-Cuban religion on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. in the West Campus student lounge, 3800 N.W. 115th Ave. On the literary front, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at MDC and Memoria Cultural magazine will host a reading by Peruvian novelist Eduardo González-Viaña on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tower Theater, 1508 S.W. Eighth Street. This event will be in Spanish.
Film lovers will have the opportunity to attend free screenings of Frida, Like Water for Chocolate, and Real Women Have Curves at the North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27th Avenue. The Inter-American Campus will host a retrospective of films by Cuban cinematographer Mario García Joya from Thursday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Tower Theater.
