MDC’S PROVOST FOR ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE FLORIDA HUMANITIES COUNCIL

Miami, Oct. 22, 2007 – Miami Dade College (MDC) Provost Dr. Norma Martin Goonen has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Florida Humanities Council (FHC). The College’s chief academic officer, who has been with the nation’s largest institution of higher education for three-and-a-half years, joins the nationally respected board established in 1973.

FHC is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It uses the disciplines of the humanities to develop public programs and resources that explore history, literary and artistic traditions, cultural values and ethics. Programs include: grants, a speakers bureau, the Florida Center for Teachers, and FORUM, a statewide magazine of Florida culture. FHC programs are designed to bring humanities scholars and scholarship to the public to provoke thoughtful discussion and critical thinking on a wide array of topics of interest to Floridians.

Governed by a 25-member board comprised of members of the academic, public, nonprofit and corporate sectors, FHC board members serve three-year terms. Six members of the FHC board are appointed by the Governor. FHC funding comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Florida and private donations.

“I am so pleased and honored to be elected to this great board and to represent Miami Dade College on this body since it is an institution that has also prioritized and developed many programs advancing the arts and humanities during its 50-year history,” said Dr. Goonen.
