MDC KENDALL CAMPUS REACHES 40-YEAR MILESTONE
~Making a World of Difference for 40 Years~
MIAMI, November 14, 2007 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus kicked-off the week-long celebration of its 40th anniversary with a sculpture dedication on Monday, Nov. 12 at 9:30 a.m. along South Perimeter Road. The sculpture, “Hangover,” by Charles Ginnever, was donated to the campus by Martin Z. Margulies.
The anniversary, called “Making a World of Difference for 40 Years,” runs from Monday, Nov. 12 through Saturday, Nov. 17 and will include a faculty concert series, a carnival and a golf tournament. One of the main highlights of the celebration will be a sold-out Latin Jazz Festival on Friday, Nov. 16 featuring Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, Ed Calle, Roberto Perera, José Negroni, Edwin Bonilla, Richard Bravo, Gary Keller and many other jazz greats and award winning musicians. The celebration will close with a reception and gala dinner dance on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The Kendall Campus opened its doors in 1967 and quickly established itself as a leader in the educational community. A year after its founding, the Kendall Campus helped black high school dropouts from disadvantaged families improve their job prospects under the Career College Program. In 1971, the Environmental Center, a program that promotes energy-efficient and environmentally friendly practices, was founded making the College a leader among environmentally minded educational institutions.
Throughout the years, the Kendall Campus has remained a symbol of excellence in the community. In 2007, President George W. Bush spoke at the campus’ commencement ceremony. Excerpts of the speech were broadcast nationally.
