MIAMI, March 9, 2006Miami Dade College’s Hialeah Campus will shine with the colors of the community as administrators, faculty, students and community leaders, including MDC Board of Trustees Chair Helen Aguirre Ferré, unveil a mural on the wall of the main campus building on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at 7:00 p.m.

The mural, entitled “Growing,” is a combined art and technology experience funded through a Miami Dade College Golden Apple Grant. The aim of the project is to promote students’ artistic participation, knowledge and creativity. The mural is a result of the work of Guilda Bolivar and the design students enrolled at the College who created and installed the wall-size mural mosaic near the cafeteria.

The project has afforded students a unique opportunity to explore their artistic talents, while seeking to improve students’ performance and retention. It encompasses an innovative approach that enhances students’ skills by encouraging critical thinking, practical applications, craft and technology applications, and a better understanding of the community and environment.  The mural was completed under the tutelage of MDC Humanities Professor Sylvia Constantinidis.

The Hialeah Campus, which opened in 1980 as an outreach center to assist thousands of immigrants obtain language and employment skills. Last fall, Dr. Cindy L. Miles was named the campus president. The Hialeah Campus currently serves 5,100 students seeking various degrees in different disciplines.
