south florida POETS DISH IT OUT AT close of NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

~ A Florida Center for the Literary Arts Event ~

- Tuesday, April 26th, at 7 p.m. -

Miami, April 19, 2005In a delicious demonstration of literary taste, Now Taste This! ™ 2005 matched South Florida poets of national renown with some of the area’s most prestigious restaurants. The goal: new and delicious poems on the dishes they tried. Now Taste This! ™ 2005 will mark the close of National Poetry Month (April 2005) with a reading of these poems on Tuesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at the Miami Dade College Wolfson CampuS, 300 N.E. Second Ave., building 3, 5th floor Terrace. This celebration, organized by the Miami Dade College’s Florida Center for the Literary Arts (FCLA) is free and open to the public.

Each poet created work based on a menu they were served at the restaurant they visited. Richard Blanco, Howard Camner, Terri Carrion, C.M. Clark, Michael Hettich, Jen Karetnick, Jeffrey Knapp, Mia Leonin, Campbell McGrath, Jesse Millner, Ricardo Pau-Llosa, Hugo Rodriguez, Michael Rothenberg, and Emma Trelles are among the participating poets who will read at the event. Munchies will be served, courtesy of the restaurant North One 10, and the Napa Valley Wine Company will serve wine.  Proceeds from a silent auction will benefit the Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Prizes include dinner for two at participating restaurants and more.

Chefs from Azul, Cacao, Chef Allen, Maroosh Mediterranean Restaurant, Mosaico, North One 10, Pacific Time, The River Oyster Bar and Two Chefs will showcase the menus poets wrote about. Customers who order the menu at one of the participating restaurants will receive copies of the finished poems – “poets’ menus” – signed by both the poet and the chef. 10% of the proceeds go to benefit the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College. The mission of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts is to promote the advancement and appreciation of the literary arts in all forms.

Now Taste This! ™ was created by poet and writer Jen Karetnick, who launched the not-for-profit event in 1997.  Karetnick has been published in the North American Review, River Styx, The Spoon River Poetry Review, Poets & Writers, and The Miami Herald, among others.
