MIAMI DADE COLLEGE PROFESSOR NAMED 2007 PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR

Miami, November 30, 2007 – Miami Dade College (MDC) professor Annmarie Masi has been named the Florida Association of Community Colleges (FACC) 2007 Professor of the Year. The award was recently announced at FACC’s 58th Annual Convention. More than 1,000 educators from 28 community colleges in Florida competed for the honor. Masi, a native of Plantation, has been an assistant professor of education at MDC since 1999.

“I am so honored to win this award,” says Masi. “I love teaching at Miami Dade College and really appreciate all of the educational, cultural, and social opportunities that the college offers to faculty and students.”

Masi says even as a child, she knew that she wanted to become a teacher. Then, in college, she was inspired by an education professor and determined that higher education would be her niche.

As a professor at MDC, Masi incorporates diverse approaches – visual, hands-on, and auditorial - in her teaching. Rather than teaching solely from textbooks, she brings learning alive with a mix of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and creative activities. “Teaching doesn’t end in the classroom,” she adds. “I’m interested in any way that I can improve my students’ lives.”

Prior to teaching at MDC, Masi served as an adjunct instructor at several other important colleges and universities in South Florida.

Masi was recently awarded a Doctorate of Education from Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Previously, she earned an Associate in Arts from Broward Community College, and Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education from FAU.

“We are very proud of Dr. Masi and her dedication to our students,” said MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón. “She is both a gifted teacher and a wonderful mentor epitomizing what MDC professors are all about.”

The Florida Association of Community Colleges represents faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, presidents, and retirees from Florida’s 28 public community colleges. Membership in the organization is currently over 8,000.
