FIFTH Annual Sister Cities art exhibition OPENS with an array of INTERNATIONAL artists AT THE TOWER THEATER
~ Miami Dade College student to be awarded
scholarship for academic excellence ~
MIAMI, Sept. 11, 2007 – The fifth annual Miami-Dade Celebrates the Art of its Sister Cities art exhibition kicks-off on Friday, Sept. 14, with a formal reception at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater, where a deserving MDC student will be awarded a $1,000 Sister Cities program scholarship for academic excellence.
The exhibit, titled “Goodwill thru Art,” will be on display for public viewing until Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the Tower Theater, 1508 S.W. 8 St., Miami. The art exhibit is open Monday through Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 4 to 7 p.m.
Hailing from all over the world, some of this year's participating international artists include: Ban Kubba from Baghdad, Iraq; Rosa Serra from Barcelona, Spain who is also the designated sculptor for the International Committee of the Olympics; Hans Frode from Sweden; Russia’s Andrei Chaplya; Jutta Rakoniewki from Germany; Yimy Chirinos from Honduras; Mexico’s Ricardo Guevara and Didier Pena Betancourt from Colombia. Cuban-born artist Leonardo Amador’s “Sister Cities Around the World” was selected as the official poster for this 5th Anniversary celebration of the arts.
As part of the month-long celebration, several events are scheduled to take place. Among them, “The Value of Art” seminar, Part I and II, Wednesday, Sept. 19 and Wednesday, Sept. 26, 7-9 p.m.; “An Evening of Music and Café”, held in conjunction with Viernes Culturales de la Calle Ocho (Cultural Fridays on Eighth Street), Friday, Sept. 28, 7-11 p.m.; “Asian Night: In Celebration of Arts, Culture and Commerce”, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7-9 p.m.; A hands-on “Creative Arts Workshop for Children” by the participating artists, Saturday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Closing reception and the silent auction will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 6 – 9 p.m. This event will feature "Music of the World: An International Jazz Concert" with the MDC North Campus Falcon Jazz Band under the direction of Professor Claudio Osorio.
