MIAMI DADE COLLEGE STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO SPAIN FOR WEEK LONG STUDY PROGRAM

MIAMI, July 25, 2005 – A group of 30 Miami Dade College students will travel to Spain to participate in the 2005 Hispanic Heritage Study Program. The week long study program is an intensive seven-day immersion experience for bilingual students of Hispanic heritage exploring the rich connections between Spain and the Americas.

Students will participate in the program from Thursday, August 11 through Friday, August 19. Students will visit cultural sites and participate in intellectual programs presented by business and academic leaders in Spain.

Students participating in the program were selected based on an application that included a transcript of their grades and a statement of purpose explaining how the study program in Spain is related to their current program of study.

“The (program) is a tremendous cultural exchange opportunity.  It is an excellent example of how students can be actively engaged in public diplomacy,” said April Burriss, Executive Director of International Education at Miami Dade College. “This international program will yield benefits to the participants and will promote even greater understanding between Spain and the United States of America.”

The week-long program will include intensive study in Spain, lectures, seminars, tours and cultural events in Madrid, Toledo and Segovia/Pedraza. The program was designed to acquaint students with the rich history and culture of Spain, the influence of Hispanic culture throughout the world and the unique Hispanic heritage shared by the people of that hemisphere. The program is co-sponsored by CAJA Madrid Bank.
