MIAMI DADE COLLEGE NAMED ALL-AMERICAN SPORTSMANSHIP SCHOOL

MIAMI, October 22, 2007—The Institute for International Sport, administrators of National Sportsmanship Day, have named Miami Dade College as one of the 2007-08 “All-American Sportsmanship Schools.”

“The 2007-08 honorees are made up of a group of schools, ranging from elementary to university, that have all clearly demonstrated a well thought-out sportsmanship program in their respective schools which has resulted in an admirable commitment to and practice of sportsmanship,” said Chris Shea, coordinator of 2008 National Sportsmanship Day. “We look for schools whose administration fosters a strong atmosphere of sportsmanship among its coaching staff and student-athletes.”

Miami Dade College is among the most successful college athletics programs in the country, with numerous national, state and conference championships throughout the 45 year history of the program.

Other institutions recognized with this honor include Indiana, Bucknell, Clemson and Auburn universities.

"This is an honor and recognition that we at Miami Dade take very seriously," said Jim Cox, MDC athletics director. "Our coaches and student-athletes are equally committed to displaying the values of sportsmanship, fair play, respect for opponents and officials, and accept our responsibility to serve as role models for the young people in our community every day of the year."

The 2007-08 All-American Sportsmanship Schools will play an active role in the 2008 National Sportsmanship Day, to be celebrated on March 4, 2008. Activities will include participation in the Institute’s “Team Sportsmanship” which involves high school and college student-athletes and coaches visiting local elementary and middle schools on National Sportsmanship Day, to lead discussions about the importance of sportsmanship.
