AT-RISK YOUTH GET A BACK-TO-SCHOOL BOOST FROM
TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE’S WOLFSON CAMPUS
MIAMI, Aug. 16, 2007 – It’s the time of year when parents are busy shopping for school supplies for their kids. But thanks to Take Stock in Children (TSIC) of Miami-Dade County and local employees from the U.S. Postal Service, some deserving families won’t have to worry about that expenditure. The groups will donate more than 450 backpacks and school supplies to at-risk youth attending Miami-Dade County public schools on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. Second Avenue, Room 3210.
Students who are currently enrolled in TSIC of Miami-Dade County have been selected as the beneficiaries of the “Back-to-School” event. The school supplies, collected by employees of the U.S. Postal Service in Miami-Dade County, include backpacks, rulers, pens, binders, notebooks, pencils, calculators and duo tangs.
TSIC of Miami-Dade County, which provides mentors and college scholarships to at-risk youth, is headquartered at the Wolfson Campus.
“We are thrilled to be providing these essential supplies to our youth,” said Guido Caroni, development specialist for TSIC of Miami-Dade County. “This allows them to concentrate on their academics. We will continue to reach out and extend a helping hand to young people striving to better their lives. We are so proud of their accomplishments, always keeping in mind the daily challenges these particular youth face within our community.”
In addition to the school supplies giveaway, TSIC of Miami-Dade County will conduct several workshops that day which will touch on subjects such as transitioning from middle to high school, career choices and study techniques.
TSIC of Miami-Dade County currently serves more than 450 students. Since 1995, the program has impacted the lives of close to 12,000 students in the State of Florida.
Students in the program sign a contract to stay in school, maintain good grades, remain crime and drug free and meet regularly with a student advocate and mentor. In turn, TSIC provides each student with a four-year scholarship, upon successfully completing the program and graduating from high school, to be used toward higher education.
