MDC’S LADY SHARKS CONTINUE MOVING UP THE LADDER TO NATIONAL VICTORY
MIAMI, November 16, 2007 – The Miami Dade College (MDC) Lady Sharks are working their way to the top at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Volleyball Championship tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
This year’s State Champions, with an undefeated record of 32-0, advanced to the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 15, after beating San Jacinto College of Texas with three straight wins to complete the five-set victory. Match scores were 22-30, 21-30, 30-20, 30-24, 15-13.
“We had terrible serve receive and passing during the first two games and could not get into our offense,” said MDC Head Coach Kiko Benoit. “Somehow, in the third game we woke up and focused and played the type of game that brought us here in the first place.”
Friday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m., the Lady Sharks will face off with third-seeded Frank Phillips College, continuing through the single elimination tournament leading up to the championship match scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
At Thursday’s match, three MDC players scored double-doubles. Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter Paola Ampudia, who had 19 kills and 16 digs. Freshman middle blocker Rosa Medrano added 16 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore setter Deyla Caceres dished out 57 assists and picked up 16 digs. Freshman outside hitter Monica Dos Santos chipped in 14 kills and seven digs. Miami Dade College teams have won eight National Volleyball Championships and been ranked in the NJCAA Top 10 every season since the ranking process began in 1977.
