discipline. Biological sciences are:
Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Human
Biology, Marine Biology, Microbiology,
Molecular Biology, and Structural Biology. Related
fields are Anatomy/Physiology, Biochemistry,

2420 Biotechnology - 5 credits
An introduction to the principles of DNA
science. The course includes: the chemical
and physical properties of nucleic acid (DNA
and RNA), cloning, restriction analysis,
gene transfer, DNA replication and
expression, plasmids and other vectors,
transcription and translation, DNA
libraries, polymerase chain reaction.
Practical applications of biotechnology will
be explored.

1201 Essentials of Nutrition
- 3 credits
Introduction to the nutrients found in
foods; the body systems which process the
nutrients; energy balance, consumer concerns
such as food additives, food-borne
illnesses, and nutrition labeling; and the
nutritional requirements in each state of
the life cycle. Application of basic
concepts from the sciences of biology,
microbiology, physiology and chemistry to
the study of human nutrition and the
concepts of nutrition to the planning of
healthful, balanced and adequate
diets.

identification, morphology and physiology of
bacteria, algae, protozoa, fungi, rickettsiae, and viruses, with emphasis on
the effects of their activities upon human
affairs.

OCB 1010C Introductory Marine Biology - 3
credits
Introduction to the Biology of the
seas. Emphasis is placed on the variety of
Marine organisms, their structural,
physiological, and behavioral adaptations
within a specific marine environment.
Special attention is directed to marine
communities, e.g., coral reefs, shallow
grass flats, and the factors limiting the
distribution of organisms within those
communities. Identification of local marine
organisms, the presentations of sampling
techniques, and an introduction to field
collection methods is facilitated through
field trips to selected local marine
habitats.

PCB 2340 Introduction to Ecology - 3 credits
This course will provide students with an
understanding and appreciation for how
organisms relate to one another and their
environment at the levels of biological
organization from the individual to the
biosphere.
Prerequisite: PCB 1515 or BSC
2011.

PCB 2340C Field Biology - 3 credits
The
plants and animals of South Florida, their
natural history and ecological
relationships. Some emphasis on basis
biological principles as applicable to local
phenomena. Field and laboratory work and
collection, preservation and identification
of local plants and animals will be stressed
and at least bimonthly field trips, both
marine and terrestrial, will be made.
