The School of Nursing offers a comprehensive program of study leading to an Associate in Science degree in nursing through several options (Generic, Bridge, Accelerated) and provides the education necessary for eligibility to write the licensing examination for registered nurse practice (NCLEX-RN).
The Associate of Science degree program in nursing enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills required to become registered nurses. Registered nurses are vital members of the health care team who assess, plan, and provide direct patient care. They work closely with physicians and other health care professionals.
Education in nursing combines class work with clinical experiences in local hospitals, heath care agencies, and the community. In addition to nursing classes and clinical assignments, students take a series of general education and basic science courses, some of which are typically completed at other campuses before admission to the School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing offers three different program options:
Generic Option, a traditional two-year program, with a full-time and a part-time track.
Bridge Option, designed for LPNs and others with selected health care education who wish to become RNs, with a full- and a part-time track.
Accelerated Option, an intense, full-time offering designed for those with a bachelor’s or higher degree in another field who wish to change careers and enter the nursing profession in one calendar year.
Through these programs, students gain the knowledge and technical skills needed for nursing.
Each program option includes obstetric, pediatric, medical/surgical, geriatric and psychiatric nursing experiences. An on-campus nursing laboratory is available for individualized practice and testing of nursing skills. In addition, supervised clinical practical in a variety of health care agencies, included as part of the program, offers students patient care experiences and opportunity to interact with individual in other health-related professions.
Program Locations
The Nursing program is offered at the Medical Center campus and the Homestead Campus. Miami Dade College also offers the generic option on-site at Baptist Hospital.
