Danny Price
Head Coach

Danny Price begins his first year as the head baseball coach at Miami Dade College, a position previously held by such legends as Steve Hertz, Charlie Greene and Demie Mainieri. Price replaces Hertz, who was MDC's head coach for 26 years and retired after the 2010 season. Price is also a veteran of the dugout, having served as the head coach at Florida International University from 1980 to 2007. During that span, Price compiled a record of 1,086-597 and helped the program grow from Division II to Division I. He was named Trans America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1991, 1995 and 1998. He also led FIU to eight NCAA Division I regionals, accomplishing the feat six times in his last 11 years at the school. Price, who has coached numerous players who went on to pro baseball, including big-league star Mike Lowell, was a hit from his first season at FIU. Price led FIU to fourth place in the 1980 Division II World Series. Price, who has a Master's degree in health education from FIU, played for the school's baseball team in 1973-1974. He returned to FIU in 1976 as the school's hitting instructor before ultimately becoming the program's most successful head coach. Now he accepts the challenge at MDC, which has a rich history in the sport.

KEVIN LONG
Assistant Coach

Kevin R. Long joined the Miami-Dade College Baseball Coaching staff in November 2003. In the six seasons from 2004 to present, he has been the Pitching Coach. During this time frame, the Sharks have posted an overall record of 245 wins and 76 defeats (a winning percentage of 76%); have won the FJCAA Southern Conference Title four (4) times (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009); have qualified for the FJCAA State Tournament five (5) times (2005 – 2009); have been ranked #1 in the State of Florida during various points during four (4) seasons (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009); and have been Nationally ranked by the NJCAA four (4) times at one point during the season (#11 in 2006, #2 in 2007, #1 in 2008, #4 in 2009).

During these six (6) seasons, many pitchers have received various awards and recognition. A break down is as follows:

  • Four (4) were named All Southern Conference 2nd Team;
  • Five (5) were named All Southern Conference 1st Team;
  • Two (2) were named Southern Conference “Fireman of the Year”;
  • One (1) was named the FJCAA “Fireman of the Year”;
  • Two (2) were named FJCAA All State 2nd Team;
  • Three (3) were named FJCAA All State 1st Team;
  • Three (3) were named by the FJCAA as “Pitcher of the Year”;
  • Two (2) were named NJCAA All American 2nd Team;
  • One (1) was named NJCAA All American 1st Team.
  • Twelve (12) were drafted by Major League Baseball teams. Nine (9) subsequently signed professional contracts.

From 2004 to 2009, Coach Long has had twenty-three (23) pitchers go on to attend four year colleges or universities with different levels of athletic competition (NCAA Division I, Division II, and NAIA) after careers at MDC. Two (2) of these pitchers received All American Honors at their respective institutions. Also, three (3) were drafted and eventually signed with MLB.

Coach Long is also an Assistant to the Athletic Director, a position he has held since September, 2007.

Prior to coming to MDC, Kevin coached locally at South Dade Senior High School, Miami-Palmetto Senior High School, and Miami-South Ridge Senior High School.

During Summer down time at MDC, Kevin has coached college baseball: 2005 and 2006 - Pitching Coach, Danbury Westerners of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL); and 2009 - Interim Pitching Coach, Wareham Gateman, Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL).

Coach Long graduated from A.G. Berner High School in Massapequa Park, New York (1969) where he was an All County pitcher. Coach Long’s college career took him to the University of Dayton in Ohio, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (1973). While at Dayton, he pitched for four (4) years, and as a senior, he was named the team’s Co-Captain. Kevin continued his education at the University of New Haven in Connecticut where he received his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice (1975).

Kevin and his wife Candy, an Office Manager for State Farm Insurance Agent Cookie O’Day, reside just down the road from MDC in Kendall.
