The Miami Dade College men’s basketball team finished 12-0 in conference play to be crowned Southern Conference Champions for the 2008-2009 season. The Sharks are ranked No. 3 in the Nation, and No.2 in the State, with a regular season record of 26-2. The Sharks also place 5 players on 1st Team All Southern Conference: Trevor Mbakwe, Rico Pickett, Darnell Dodson, William Coleman, and James Beatty. Mbakwe is also Southern Conference-Player-of-the-Year. Sophomore, Anthony Phillips was named 2nd Team All Conference, while Head Coach Matt Eisele is Conference Coach-of-the-Year.

Miami Dade College’s Trevor Mbakwe was the FCCAA Player of the Week 2/17/09. Mbakwe,, averaged 26.5 points and 18.0 rebounds by posting huge double-doubles in a pair of Southern Conference wins. Against Indian River on February 9, Mbakwe hit 10-of-16 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws en route to a 28-point, 21-rebound night. On February 14, recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 25 points and 15 rebounds against Brevard. For the week, Mbakwe shot 61.8 percent (21-of-34) from the floor and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the foul line and also tallied three blocked shots.

Miami Dade College’s Trevor Mbakwe has been selected as the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games Feb. 1-Feb. 8. Mbakwe, a 6'8" forward from St. Paul, Minn., is the Division I Player of the Week after posting two dominating double-double performances for No. 3 MDC. He posted his eighth double-double of the season on Feb. 4 when he scored 18 points with 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in a 102-70 win over Broward College. He then got his ninth double-double on Feb. 7 with 25 points and 19 rebounds to go along with another four assists and three blocks in an 88-85 victory over Palm Beach College. Mbwake shot 63 percent (14-22) from the field on the week and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line.

Miami Dade College’s Rico Pickett is this week’s FCCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Pickett, a second-year guard out of Decatur, Ala., led the Sharks past Indian River in a key Southern Conference contest, one that featured two of the state’s top four teams. In Miami Dade’s 92-69 win over then-No. 4 Indian River, Pickett hit 13 of his 16 field goal attempts (1-for-3 on three-pointers) and two of four from the foul line en route to a 29-point night. He also tallied six rebounds, six assists and one steal.

Sporting News College Basketball Magazine ranks Miami Dade College No. 3 in the Nation. “Make no mistake, coach Matt Eisele is on the fast track to a big-time career. Eisele has amassed some major talent in only his second year, including a handful of sophomores who could beat some low-major NCAA schools. Sophomore William Coleman, Darnell Dodson (who transferred from Pittsburgh), James Beatty and Rico Pickett (an Alabama Transfer), Sharod Minus (9.7ppg), and Anthony Phillips (12.2ppg)
