MDC Lady Sharks Softball Team

 
 

The Lady Sharks finished their regular season play by splitting a double header vs. Brevard and Palm Beach Community College and securing a second place finish in the Southern Conference with a record of 11 wins and 7 losses. The team also qualified for the FCCAA & NJCAA Atlantic District Tournament this May 1-3 in Auburndale, Florida. In both games the MDC battery (Bennett-Morimoto) pitchers and catcher did the most damage to their rivals. Erika Bennett pitched two shut outs allowing 3 hits and striking out 24 batters in both games to pass 200 strikeouts for the season and improving to 19-6-4. Vivian Morimoto went 5x9, with 2 doubles, 2 Homers and 6 RBI's during both series to finish the season with a .400 batting average, 42 RBI's and 6 Homers in the regular season.

MDC Catcher- Vivian Morimoto is named NFCA All American Third Team. Morimoto finished the season ranked #7 in the State for hitting .408, #7 for RBI’s with 44 on the season, ranked #10 for homeruns: 7, #15 for fielding percentage .982, and #16 for on base percentage .436.

Lady Sharks Catcher, Vivian Morimoto and Pitcher Erika Bennett are named to the NFCA All Region Teams. Morimoto is named 1st Team All Region and Bennett is named 2nd Team All Region. Morimoto batted .408, with 44 RBIs, and 7 homeruns on the season. While Bennett had an ERA of .819, 21-6 record, ranking her #7 in the State, and 229 strikeouts this season, ranking her #3 in the State. .

 
 

Lady Sharks Place 13 on FCCAA All Southern Conference Teams

 
 

The MDC Softball Team placed 13 players on the All Southern Conference Teams. Five of the Lady Sharks have been named 1st Team All Southern Conference: Simone Suetsugu, Amanda Lara, Vivian Morimoto, Simone Miyahira, and Erika Bennett. Two named to 2nd Team All Soutern Conference: Jeanette Falcon and Annike Don, as well as six named Honorable Mention: Jennifer Rioseco, Mariana Patraca, Rebecca Hall, Jordan Marcum, Tiffany Mullins-Diaz, and Tamara Hidalgo.

Miami Dade College’s Vivian Morimoto named FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Morimoto, a first-year player from Sao Paulo, Brazil, batted .785 (11-of-14) with one home run and five RBI during the Southern Conference Tournament. In the March 7 opener against FCCAA No. 2 Indian River, she went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Later that day, she had the first of three straight three-hit games and also drove in three runs against Palm Beach. She ended the two-day tourney with three-hit games against Broward and FCCAA No. 8 Brevard on March 8.

Miami Dade College’s Erica Bennett, named Pitcher of the Week: 2/24/2009. Bennett, a first-year player from Sierra Vista, Arizona, tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts last week for the Sharks. On Feb. 21, she went the distance in MDC’s 4-0 win over Seminole. The next day, she pitched all eight innings, allowing only one hit in the process, in the Shark’s 1-0 win against Manatee. For the week, Bennett yielded only 4 hits and three walks while striking out 14 batters in 15 total innings of work.

Freshman Pitcher Erika Bennett set a Miami Dade College record by pitching five consecutive shutouts for the softball team. During the five-game stretch, Bennett pitched 35 innings, allowed eight hits, and struck out 34 batters.

 
 

Champs!

 
 

The Lady Shark Softball team won the Triple Crown Classic held in Augustine, FL by beating the NJCAA pre-season nationally ranked No. 2, Chattanooga State, in the tournament championship game by a score of 4-2. Leading the Shark attack was pitcher Erika Bennett pitched, who pitched a complete game to earn the win and improve to 3 and 0 for the season, while striking out 13 batters.

MDC signs new talent for the 2010 season! New signees include: OF-Stephanie Buendia, and IF/OF-Noemi Rodriguez of Braddock High School, C-Alexandra Ramos of Pines Charter, OF/IF-Katrina Miguel of Miami Killian, IF/OF-Ashley Silveira of Monsignor Pace, and P-Stephanie Martinez of Archbishop Carroll.

 
 

MDC Signs New Talent

 
 

MDC Lady Sharks Softball Team Miami Dade College's Women's Softball Program finished the signing of their scholarships for the 2008-2009 season by signing Nicole Rodriguez (middle) from Braddock Senior High, Tamara Hidalgo (left) from St. Brendan Academy and Amanda Lara (right) from Homestead Senior High. Other local standout players: Tiffany Mullins-Diaz from Palmetto Senior High who was a member of the 2008 Palmetto Softball State Championship Team and pitcher Andrea Duarte from Robert Morgan Vocational Center. MDC has also signed top pitchers Vicky Martin from Cooper City Senior High. as well as Arizona stand out Erika Bennett who has been clocked at 63 MPH. This is the first time that MDC will have 6 international players on their roster. The team will have two players from Brazil, middle infielder Simone Suetsugu and catcher Vivian Morimoto, both members of the Brazilian National Softball Team. Rebecca Hall a lefty power hitter and first baseman, and Kayla Maclean a pitcher are both from Canada. From the Dominican Republic is power pitcher/hitter and utility player, Geovany Nuñez and from Mexico returning pitcher Mariana Patraca.
