MDC Volleyball Finishes 5th in the Nation
2009 State Champions and Southern Conference Champions

MDC Lady Sharks Volleyball Team

The 2009 Miami Dade College volleyball team finishes the NJCAA National Tournament 5th in the nation, with a record of 32-5, losing it’s only match in the tournament to the National Championship Team: College of Southern Idaho. Freshman, Yenifer Calcano was named to the NJCAA All Tournament Team.

Head Coach Kiko Benoit was named AVCA Northeast-Southeast Region Coach of the Year and had two players named NJCAA & AVCA All-Americans. Sophomore Sandra Montoya was named 1st Team All American and freshman, Yenifer Calcano was named 2nd Team All American.

The Lady Sharks were also crowned 2009 FCCAA State Champions defeating Hillsborough Community College in the championship match 25-20, 25-20, 25-13. Yenifer Calcano, Sandra Montoya, Ann Stebner-Chala, and Mima Hajdukovic were named to the FCCAA All Tournament Team, and Calcano was named MVP of the Tournament. Also, Calcano, Stebner-Chala, and Montoya were named to the All-State Team, and Montoya was honored as the #1 Player in the State.

NJCAA and AVCA All Americans

MDC sophomore Sandra Montoya and freshman, Yenifer Calcano were named 2009 NJCAA All Americans. Montoya, 1st Team, and Calcano, 2nd Team. These players were also honored as AVCA All Americans for the 2009 Season, along side Head Coach Kiko Benoit who was named AVCA Two-Year College Northeast-Southeast Region Coach of the Year.

The Lady Sharks placed 3 layers on the All-State Team. Sandara Montoya, also named #1 Player in the State, finished the season ranked in the state at #3 Digs, #12 Hitting Efficiency, #34 Kills, #47 Blocks, and nationally ranked at #12 for Digs. Yenifer Calcano, All-State, finished the season ranked in the state at #1 Kills,#7 Aces, #10 Hitting Efficiency, #16 Digs, #23 Blocks, and ranked nationally #11 Kills, #33 Aces, #37 Hitting Eff. Freshman, OH, Anne Stebner-Chala, All-State, finished the season ranked in the state at #7 Kills, #14 Hitting Eff., #27 Aces, and nationally #47 Kills.

The Miami Dade College volleyball team signs high school stand-outs Christine Lozano and Stephanie Toledo (pictured left to right) for the 2009-10 season. Lozano, a 5’8” setter from Florida Christian High School, named 2nd Team 3A All-State Team, and 1st Team All Dade Class 4A-1A: 795 assists, 187 digs, 62 aces on the season. Stephanie Toledo, a 6’2” middle blocker from Dr. Michael Krop High School was named 1st Team All Dade Class 5A-6A: 232 kills, 52 aces, 42 blocks on the season.
