The Miami Dade College women’s basketball team finished 8-4 in conference play and placed 3rd in the conference qualifying them for a 19th trip to the FCCAA State Championship Tournament. Currently, the Lady Sharks are ranked No.10 in the State, with a regular season record of 15-12. They also place 2 players on 1st Team All Southern Conference: Kquanise Byrd and Frances Puello. Freshman, Ashleigh Kelly was named to the 2nd Team All Conference, while sophomore Brittany Bemis and freshman Ruthie Martin are named Southern Conference Honorable Mentions.

Miami Dade College’s Kquanise Byrd is this week’s FCCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors. Byrd, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., had only one game last week but she made it count, leading the Lady Sharks to a big 84-61 win over Indian River in a key Southern Conference showdown. Against the Lady Pioneers, Byrd scored 31 points on 10-of-23 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 from the foul line to go along with four rebounds, three assists and one steal.

NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The Miami Dade College sophomore point guard averaged 23.0 points per game last week as her team won two of three games. In a 59-54 win over Palm Beach, Byrd recorded 22 points, against Hillsborough (60-47) she posted 29 points and against Brevard (72-76) she added 18 points. The 5'7" sophomore also posted eight assists, six steals and 10 rebounds for the three games and shot an impressive 81 percent from the free throw line.

MDC’s Kquanise Byrd: FCCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week: 1/14/09. Byrd averaged 27.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4.0 steals in two games for the Lady Sharks. On January 5, Byrd tallied 28 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. She followed that with another solid outing in the Southern Conference opener against Brevard on Jan. 10, when she had 27 points, six rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. Byrd also continued to be a consistent weapon at the foul line, hitting 19-of-25 attempts in the two games.

The MDC Women’s Basketball team participated in a volunteer community service activity for the College to support Amendment 8 in the upcoming election with Head Coach Susan Summons, and Athletic Director Jim Cox.

Graduating from Miami Dade for the Lady Sharks (2007-2008) are Sable Adams (left) and Aurelie Derononcourt (right). Adams signed to play with Florida International University; Derononcourt signed to play with the University of Montevallo after leading the Lady Sharks to the State Championship Tournament.
