America’s Most Influential Sports Educators


Head Women’s Basketball Coach Susan Summons of Miami Dade College has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sport. 

Susan Summons is an experienced coach, teacher, recruiter, administrator, and community relations advocate on both the national and international levels. A former pro basketball player, she is an associate professor and head women’s basketball coach at Miami-Dade College, an acclaimed motivational speaker and the founder of the Best of the Rest Stars, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides a basketball training academy to girls and boys. Over 95 percent of Summons’ Miami-Dade players have gone on to continue their education at four-year institutions. Her enthusiasm, dedication, energy, national notoriety and experience have made her one of the most recognized and respected women's basketball coaches and educators in the United States.

In addition to this honor, the Institute for International Sport has named Miami Dade College as an All American Sportsmanship School.

Erica enters her 23rd season with the Lady Sharks Women’s Basketball program. She has served on numerous occasions as the Interim Head Coach. Her dedication and commitment to the early foundation development of the program has played a pivotal role in the Women’s Basketball program gaining national recognition as one of the top programs in the country both academically and athletically. The program has been ranked in the nation and is consistently one of the top programs in the State. Erica Redman helped to guide the Lady Sharks to the programs historical 18th appearance in the FCCAA/Regional State Championship tournament held annually in Marianna, Florida, including the 2008 Southern Conference Championship. On four consecutive times, Erica has been the recipient of the MDC Colleges Excellence Award. She has helped to boast the student-athlete graduation and placement rate of 91.3% to some of the nations elite national programs like, Auburn, FIU, Georgia, Depaul, and UM.  Erica serves as a recruiting coordinator and community outreach liaison. She has been responsible for recruiting All Americans,   Courtney Cooper, Kathy Brown, Dade County Player of the Year, Stacy Young, and   Navodda Wilson, who led the nation in rebounding, and former WNBA player and MDC All American, Danielette Coleman. In addition, Erica is also the SAAP Coordinator for the Athletics Programs at the college and overseas the academic progress for all sports. Erica is also the Director of Recruitment at Miami Dade College, Medical Center Campus. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Print/Broadcast Journalism from Florida A&M University, and a Master Degree in Adult Education from Florida International University.
