Description: Although one of the fundamental purposes of education is to prepare students for effective participation in a diverse democratic society, the vast majority of our students leave unprepared for this task.  Service-learning is a teaching strategy that not only aims to enhance classroom learning and help the community, but also helps foster civic responsibility.  This workshop will examine the role and obligation of higher education to produce good citizens.  Participants will examine the concept of civic responsibility and explore a variety of techniques to help improve civic education.

 As a result of successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define civic responsibility and understand its importance in higher education.
  • Integrate a civic responsibility component into their curriculum.
  • Utilize a variety of reflection techniques that foster civic responsibility.
  • Assess the success of a civic responsibility component.
