This course is designed to provide the advanced student with an awareness of the five elements of accent reduction: correct pronunciation of consonants, intonation, stress and rhythm. This will include a review of the pronunciation of consonants, the stress placed on content words in English sentences, the importance of intonation in questions and statements, and the rhythm of the language.

Advanced grammar concepts previously studied will be reintroduced for review. Students will acquire the adequate grammatical and written skills to function effectively in the workplace, to perform better on college entrance tests, and to pursue higher education programs.

Improve your ability to communicate orally in English through listening and speaking activities. You will use audio and video clips, as well as class discussions and pronunciation exercises to strengthen your listening and speaking skills, develop new vocabulary, and continue to learn about American culture.

This course is designed for beginners. Special emphasis is placed on grammar along with simple sentence structure using daily vocabulary. Students will learn numbers, the days of the week, the months of the year, the date and how to tell the time. Every week homework is assigned for the following week; it consists of written exercises from the textbook.

Classes are conducted completely in French. Students have already acquired basic French skills and wish to become more fluent. One past tense is taught at this level: le passé-composé. Students will acquire new vocabulary, for example: members of the family, clothes, colors, weather, seasons, food and how to use the Paris subway. Students have homework every week.

Lessons of units 7 to 10 deal with serious subjects and students are encouraged to express their own views on these subjects; the "questions personnelles" exercises provide plenty of practice for the students.

To make this level more lively and interesting to the students various materials are used in class such as short stories in French, Magazine articles, crossword puzzles, and more.

Practice the French you have already learned and increase your vocabulary in this low-level conversation class. Topics include travel, French culture, art, music, recreation, and much more. You will build on your basic knowledge and be able to speak for 2 or 3 minutes on a given topic, express opinions, agree or disagree, ask for and give advice.

This course is designed for the beginner who would like to converse in basic German. Course material covers real life situations that one might encounter as a tourist or visitor. One half of the class time will be dedicated to fundamental grammar, while the other will focus on communication. Students are encouraged to share from their own experience.

This course is designed for the beginner to acquire basic Japanese conversational skills and knowledge of Japanese culture. Emphasis is placed on daily conversational patterns and sentence structure. Hiragana and Katakana as well as up to 50 Kanji characters will be introduced. Cultural awareness includes manners, dress, the tea ceremony, cooking, and flower arranging.

The fourteen week course is for beginners who have no knowledge of Italian and would like to acquire basic concepts of conversation. Part of the class is dedicated to learning grammar and the other part to applying concepts to conversation. Students will be able to engage in asking simple questions like directions and greetings.

The fourteen week course will continue to cover grammatical concepts, review basic conversation and advance to more complex activities dealing with real life in Italy. The students will be able to talk with the professor and among themselves about the culture of Italy and its people.

The fourteen week course will continue to cover grammatical concepts such as double pronouns and subjunctive verbs. This course will be for people that have some knowledge of Italian or have completed basic and intermediate courses. Students will be able to converse in Italian and write about personal experiences. More advanced topics of Italian culture will be introduced and discussed.

Begin to communicate in Brazilian Portuguese. You will learn to use simple sentence structures, present tense of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in a conversational setting. Topics include time and date, food, restaurants, hotels, daily activities at home and work, and Brazilian culture.

This course is conducted entirely in Portuguese. Students are encouraged to avoid using English by "talking around" and unknown word by using descriptions, gestures, etc. Topics of discussion are topical and may be decided by the students.

Practice the Portuguese you have already learned and increase your vocabulary in this low-level conversation class. Topics include travel, Brazilian culture, art, music, recreation, and much more. Knowledge of basic spoken Portuguese is required.

You will develop an understanding of the basic principles of ASL. Display basic conversation skills with ASL.

You will develop a further understanding of Deaf Culture, use and understand advanced principles of ASL, learn appropriate conversational skills, facial expressions, and other parameters of ASL.

Students continue to develop oral skills in Spanish. Role plays and student presentations are used to provide practice. Topics of discussion include sports, daily activities, shopping in Latin America, food, and cars.

The course is conducted entirely in Spanish. Students are encouraged to avoid using English by “talking around” an unknown word by using descriptions, gestures, etc. Topics of discussion are topical and may be decided by the students. Students should come to class prepared to talk for 3-5 minutes on a topic of interest, usually something that has happened during the week.

This course is designed to offer low-beginning students of English the BASIC vocabulary and language needed to communicate in life skills situations. During this class, students will be encouraged to participate in a variety of interactive exercises and activities, such as active speaking, comprehension skills, small-group and full-class practice, and grammar structures.

Review structures from previous levels and learn more sophisticated structures such as passive voice, embedded questions, tag questions, reported speech, and modals.

Students will learn to brainstorm for ideas, write an outline, use correct sentence structure, write longer compositions, distinguish between formal and informal writing styles and proofread and edit their work.

Students will prepare to meet the challenge of the new IBT TOEFL which involves an integrated approach to reading, listening, speaking, and writing tasks specific to an academic context. Included in the necessary skill sets are note taking and the synthesizing, paraphrasing, and summarizing of spoken and written information.

Learn more about American culture and improve your English skills through reading and discussion. This book club is open to all students who are able to read at an advanced level. Students will read mostly on their own time. Class time will be dedicated to analysis of the story, discussion of cultural situations, vocabulary building , and listening skills.
