Workshop: Engaging Large Classes

Course ID - CTD0381

Short Title:  Large Class

 Audience    Faculty
Length of Workshop:       2 hours
Prerequisite     none

Description:
This seminar will explore improving large classroom teaching. Most first-year students find themselves in at least one large, entry-level course.  But for students, the experience can be numbing, and for instructors, the experience can be daunting.  Instructors fall back on lecture because it seems to be the only way to handle a large class. But there is a way to engage learners in interesting, meaningful activities. During a face-to-face group discussion following the webinar, participants will identify strategies to engage students in large classes.

* Approved CT&D Workshop for Faculty Professional Development hours.

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how to reduce the impersonal space that separates them from learners
  • Describe strategies to reduce lecture time and replace it with activities that promote deep learning
  • Explain how to create an atmosphere of shared responsibility for learning
  • Describe how to make learners accountable for their behaviors
  • Explain strategies to motivate learners by addressing learning differences in presentations and assignments
  • Identify at least three strategies that can be used to engage students in large classes
