Description:

Miami Dade College relies heavily on information systems, networks, computers, and the information they contain to fulfill its obligations to faculty, staff, students, and society.  College Training & Development offers a series of three workshops which address desktop information security. 

The primary goal of this workshop series is to raise the level of awareness of Miami Dade College employees and to create a new information security culture founded in the realization that we all must work together to protect confidential information.  Through information security awareness we guard against identity theft and the protection and preservation of the good reputation that Miami Dade College enjoys. 

These three courses are not prerequisites to one another, however they do move towards further detail as they go along.  Therefore, in order to get the most from each course, it is recommended they be taken as a series and sequentially. 

Security Basics 1

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why information security is important to Miami Dade College
  • List the do's and don'ts of desktop security
  • Explain how to recognize and avoid social engineering 

Security 2

  • Explain why information security is a culture
  • Explain the difference between security policy and security procedure
  • Explain what information security compliance is and the repercussions  of non-compliance

  • Explain some of the sources of information security threats and how to mitigate them

Security 3

  • Explain what malicious logic is and provide examples
  • Explain (at a high level) what vulnerability analysis is
  • Explain the least privileged concept
  • Explain what multi-layered approach means

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.  

New - Easier registration for workshops

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
