Description:
Participants will explore what the
research indicates about how students learn and how service-learning is
a powerful pedagogy to tap into these teaching/learning opportunities.
Participants will learn about the essential elements of “high quality
service-learning” and how they can incorporate these into their
teaching. Best practices in student assessment and service-learning
will be presented, and a course design utilizing service-learning and
student assessment will be developed. Information on service-learning
in the context of civic engagement will be presented. Participants will
also delve into community perspectives on service-learning and ways in
which MDC faculty can create sustained change in their students and
communities through quality service-learning.

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explained how students learn and ways in which
service-learning can address these models
- Explain the importance of service-learning
as a means to promote civic engagement
- Utilize a method of assessment as it relates to
service-learning and the course objectives
- Identify at least three core elements required
for high quality service-learning
- Explain community perspective of service-learning
and higher education
- Identify the value of service-learning as a
teaching/learning pedagogy supported by research

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
If you need special assistance to
participate in this workshop due to a disability, please call CT&D at
7-2366 so that appropriate arrangements can be made. College
