Description:
The College Prep discipline is evolving at a rapid pace, and the
discipline members might appreciate professional development
opportunities that support their roles in this changing discipline. In
order to enhance student success, the discipline is moving from a
three-level to a two-level program and researching alternative modes of
instruction, the use of diagnostics, and potential roles of the lab in
the College Prep curriculum. This workshop focuses on alternative modes
of instruction, but also touches upon the other two critical areas being
researched within the discipline. This effort is aligned with MDC
Strategic Goal 1, review and transform curriculum and its delivery to
optimize student access and success. It specifically supports the
objective to redesign developmental education to increase student
success and completion and to facilitate expedient and effective
transition into college-level courses. Come join our workshop to hear
best practices for redesigning your courses and redesigning your labs.
Topics include modularizing your content, creating fast-paced courses
for students who barely placed into College Prep, new ways to run the
lab, assign homework, and deal with the skills side of the courses. Dr.
Martha Campbell, Dean of Communication Arts at St Petersburg, and Mr.
Marc Sonnenfeld, Senior Curriculum Specialist at Broward College North,
will present their experiences with redesigning Developmental Education
Reading and Writing courses.
