Description:
In fall 2009, 50 percent of MDC credit students reported a native language other than English.  Fluency in English is the key to learning academic content and to the process of adapting to a second culture. Since classroom language learning is very distinct from home language acquisition, this workshop will help participants understand the factors in classroom instruction that affect second language acquisition and the process of acculturation. Both processes ultimately affect academic achievement and the well-being of English Language Learners (ELLs). The format of the workshop is a blend of face-to-face meetings and online instruction (two face-to-face sessions of two hours each, plus 16 hours on online instruction over several weeks).

Participants will write a reflection paper, minimum 5 pages, in response to the questions below. The paper will be due to the facilitator at the final face-to-face meeting of the workshop.
1. What connections have you made between language acquisition research and the principles and practices or teaching in your field, e.g.,
    science, math, language arts, or social studies?
2. How can you embed the principle and strategies of making connections to students lives cultures in your teaching of English language learners (and all learners)?

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain ways in which cultural diversity is an asset
  • Implement effective classroom practices to teach all students to value linguistic and cultural diversity
  • Generate methods to educate ELL students equitably
  • Make connections between language acquisition research and the principles and practices of teaching in their own academic field

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
