Fluency in English is the key to learning academic content and to the process of adapting to a second culture. Since classroom language learning is very distinct from home language acquisition, this workshop will help participants understand the factors in classroom instruction that affect second language acquisition and the process of acculturation. Both processes ultimately affect academic achievement and the well-being of English Language Learners (ELLs). The format of the workshop is a blend of face-to-face meetings and online instruction (two face-to-face sessions of two hours each, plus 16 hours on online instruction over several weeks).
Participants will write a reflection paper, minimum 5 pages, in response to the questions below. The paper will be due to the facilitator at the final face-to-face meeting of the workshop.
