This workshop, part of a series, is designed to provide writing faculty with strategies for meeting the challenges of today's first-year composition classroom. Each workshop includes an hour-long web seminar featuring lecture and instruction of a key literacy expert on an important topic. Following the seminar, there will be a meaningful interaction and discussion among the participants guided by a facilitator. Finally, participants will complete a required assignment that focuses on reflection and application.

In this workshop, learn how to make your writing instruction more effective by taking a strategic approach. After an overview of the principles involved, practice turning an existing assignment into a strategy practice that will benefit your student writers.

In this practically-based Web seminar, college-experienced teacher and author Debbie Dean will help participants enhance their writing by considering process as a strategy and genre as an approach to teaching.

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by a strategic approach to process
  • Formulate ideas that can be used for teaching strategies
  • Turn a writing assignment into strategies instruction
  • Define what a genre approach means
  • Develop strategies for genres
  • Encourage transfer of strategies
