Description:
This two hour experiential learning activity takes participants on a tour of the Miami-Dade Resources Recovery Facility operated by Covanta Power Corporation.  It will focus on the waste to energy processes that are utilized at this site.  The Covanta Energy Resource Recovery Center processes more than 4,000 tons of garbage and trash each day and is reportedly the largest waste-to-energy facility in the world.  The social, environmental, financial and health issues relating to waste disposal will be examined.  An on-site, twelve acre wetland restoration project will also be inspected.  Participants will be asked to share in writing how they will incorporate into their classes their awareness of the link between waste disposal, levels of consumption, and environmental health issues. *

Objectives

 As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Explain benefits and drawbacks of various methods of waste disposal including incineration, landfills, recycling and waste-to-energy facilities
• Develop critical analyses of the future of waste disposal, a problem that is increasing with an expanding population and the rise in per capita consumption of goods
• Express an understanding of the link between environmental/human health and the pollution of groundwater and air associated with waste disposal
• Describe some of the values and problems associated with habitat restoration in an environmentally degraded urban/suburban area.

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
