Description:
This symposium will help participants understand the crucial role higher
education plays in bringing about an environmentally sustainable future.
Participants will identify steps that are currently being taken, as well
as offer ideas and approaches that could be employed within the College,
to achieve a lighter ecological footprint as well as promote
environmental literacy among our faculty, staff and students. Members
from the South Florida community will address environmental issues from
their professions, and how those professions are evolving to include
current ecological concerns.

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe the
urgency of mainstreaming environmental sustainability in higher
education

Use the Earth
Charter as a guide to understanding sustainability and as a
framework to address the need to incorporate it in higher education

Identify possible
actions based on practices internationally and in Florida, including
the efficacy of sustainability declarations, community college
involvement, examples from Africa and Australia, and lessons from
Florida Gulf Coast University

Identify steps
currently being taken to achieve a lighter ecological footprint
-
Promote
environmental literacy among our faculty, staff, and students
-
Provide ideas and
approaches that could be employed within the College

Explain how
professionals in the community address environmental issues from
their profession

Exemplify how
those professions are evolving to include current ecological
concerns
-
Create a lesson
incorporating environmental sustainability into his or her specific
discipline or incorporate an action in support of environmental
sustainability into his or her specific department

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
If you need special assistance to
participate in this workshop due to a disability, please call CT&D at
7-2366 so that appropriate arrangements can be made. College
