In this workshop, Jill Britton of Camosun College will explore the mathematical basis of Escher's tessellations and reveal how she uses Escher's art to stimulate students' interest and draw them into the study of mathematics. Participants will design a tessellating template, turn it into a rubber stamp, and then execute a two-color print. In the words of Escher's son George, the activity will "mirror what father did". Jill will also share a myriad of on-line recreational mathematics resources for use in the mathematics classroom (accessible via her web site jbmathfun.com).
