Description:
 The mesmerizing works of M.C. Escher never fail to engage and intrigue the viewer, but how many of us have paused to consider the mathematical principles behind his famous artwork? In this workshop, Jill Britton of Camosun College will explore the mathematical basis of Escher's tessellations and reveal how she uses Escher's art to stimulate students' interest and draw them into the study of mathematics. Participants will design a tessellating template, turn it into a rubber stamp, and then execute a two-color print. In the words of Escher's son George, the activity will "mirror what father did". Jill will also share a myriad of on-line recreational mathematics resources for use in the mathematics classroom (accessible via her web site jbmathfun.com).

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:  

  • Describe the mathematical basis of some of M.C. Escher's most famous tessellations.
  • Produce a two-color print from a tessellating rubber stamp based on a square modified by translation.
  • List and describe some online resources for mathematics instruction that support the math-art connection.

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
