Description:
This STEM workshop will explore the theme Ensuring Enough, for All, Forever. MDC faculty will be provided with an understanding of education for sustainability development from a STEM perspective, as well as how to utilize the pedagogy of service-learning in achieving course and college learning outcomes. The workshop will also provide an opportunity for faculty to develop relationships with community organizations while collaborating on identifying and developing service-learning experiences exploring the interrelationship between social justice, environmental sustainability and economic sustainability. Faculty will also explore ho to assess students mastery of course learning objectives and MDC Learning Outcomes when participating in STEM service-learning.
 
 

Objectives

As a result of successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Define "Education for Sustainable Development" 
• Discuss how economic sustainability, social justice and environmental sustainability are interconnected
• Describe three reflection techniques appropriate for their course and STEM service-learning
• Design a service-learning component applicable to their course's learning objectives utilizing one or  more methods of reflection
• Describe three strategies to assess service-learning assignments in STEM disciplines
• Identify discipline specific service-learning projects
• Describe two community partner STEM-related needs that can be fulfilled by service-learning students.

How to Register

Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and Registration system.  The process for registering for a CTD workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.

You can access the Registration System and register for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to login to your computer.    Example:   Richard Johnson  would be rjohnson     (You will NOT need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD workshop) 

Make a note of the Reference Number for the workshop then go to Registration Instructions

Once you have registered for a class, you can print your schedule.    Please make every effort to attend once you've registered as seats are limited.     However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web Registration screen.     CTD classes will appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
