Description:
In order to have faculty and staff who are knowledgeable in the use of
the Magellan GPS receivers housed at the North Campus Science Complex
Environmental Sciences Lab, participants will learn three basic modes of
GPS receiver use in this workshop (Static Precision, Fast Static,
Kinematic and real time).
Following the training, participants
will map the palm tree locations in the North Campus palmetum, and the
data will be uploaded to Google Earth. The workshop facilitator will
evaluate the GPS mapping of the palm trees in the palmetum for accuracy
in Google earth. Faculty will have two attempts to submit completed
palmetum GPS data to the workshop organizer. The first attempt will be
due one week after the workshop on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. If necessary,
the second attempt will be due Tuesday, March 15, 2011. In
addition, faculty will submit the outline of one lesson plan that
incorporates the use of the GPS receivers into a course they are
qualified to teach at MDC. the lesson outline will be due to the
workshop organizer by Tuesday, March 8, 2011.

Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Use GPS receivers in static precision mode
- Use GPS receivers in fast static mode
- Use GPS receivers in Kinematic and Real-time mode
- Upload data to Google Earth
- Use GPS in courses, labs, and school outreach

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
