Description:
This workshop will focus upon the manager's role as it relates to a core
of essential MDC policies and procedures. Topics include: the
nature and responsibilities of management; the hiring process
(recruitment and interviewing); orientation and training; sexual
harassment awareness and prevention; managing a diverse workforce; and
performance management (counseling, documenting, progressive discipline,
and performance review).
Objectives
As a result of successful completion of the
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the manager's role in the
hiring process
- Describe MDC recruitment/hiring
process guidelines for full and part-time employees
- Explain the roles and responsibilities
of the screening committee
- Describe how hiring practices are
affected by Equal Opportunity laws
- Explain the importance of having an
interview plan which is based on job knowledge/skills and a
preplanned set of interview questions
- Identify situations in which training
is appropriate
- Know how to plan specific on-the-job
training
- Develop a plan for orienting new
employees
- Define and identify sexual harassment
- Explain their rights and
responsibilities under the law and MDC's policies and procedures
related to sexual harassment
- Explain how to report problems related
to sexual harassment
- Identify the consequences of
inappropriate behavior or failure to take appropriate action
- Plan and conduct effective coaching,
counseling and discipline session
- Explain the importance of proper
documentation
- Explain the key points of the
performance documentation worksheet (facts, objectives, solutions
and actions)
- Know how to follow the MDC
procedures for progressive discipline and the grievance procedure
(Policy II-71)
- List the six steps involved in MDC's
written appraisal system
- Use the criteria for rating PEC, PENC,
and SNE personnel
- Describe MDC's best practices and
pitfalls to avoid
- Explain the wide range of behaviors
that may constitute discrimination and harassment
- Understand that free speech rights do
not apply in the workshop
- Explain what constitutes a
"tangible employment action"
- Understand that everyone has a right
to work in an environment free from discrimination and harassment

How to Register
Registration for CT&D workshops are through the Student Information and
Registration system. The process for registering for a CTD
workshop will be the same as registering for a regular class at MDC.
You can access the Registration System and register
for a CTD workshop using the same user name and password that use to
login to your computer. Example: Richard
Johnson would be rjohnson (You will
NOT
need to create a separate student myMDC account to register for a CTD
workshop)
Make a note of the Reference Number for the
workshop then go to
Registration Instructions
Once you have registered for a class, you can print your
schedule. Please make every effort to attend once
you've registered as seats are limited.
However, If you need to drop, you can also do this through the Web
Registration screen. CTD classes will
appear on your transcript as non-credit classes.
If you need special assistance to
